Guideposts Interview - Reel Inspiration March 2011
(For information - Kevin had a painful eye in this interview)
Jessica: Hi, I’m Jessica Bloustein, and welcome to a very special episode of Reel Inspiration. I’m here with actor Kevin Sorbo, you may recognize him from some of his popular starring roles, he played Hercules in Hercules The Legendary Journeys, Kull The Conqueror, and Captain Dylan Hunt on the hit tv series Andromeda. Recently he starred in two films that we think that you will love, What If and Soul Surfer, and Kevin is here to tell us a little bit more about both films;
Kevin: The movie What If is about a gentleman played by me and his name is Ben Walker, and Ben is a guy that had a chance in his life to…in his twenties…to take on a job that would only take him away from his fiancée for a year, well what happens is fifteen years goes by, and he’s now a very successful banker, takeover specialist, and he has left his fiancée, left his life behind him; he’s visited by a very smart alecky curmudgeon angel in the form of John Ratzenberger, who slaps him up a little bit, to show him how much basically he’s screwed up his life. I look at What If as a sort of reverse It’s a Wonderful Life where it’s just…this guy, he really thought his life was perfect the way it was and he liked what he was doing, when he’s thrown back…he’s not really thrown back, he’s thrown into a parallel world of what could have been for him at that same age had he stayed on that same course; it’s about getting a second chance at life..and I think a lot of people are afraid to take second chances in their lives because they’re ruled by their own fear, and almost every successful person I know has had failure after failure after failure, and they use those things as a positive thing, and that’s what this movie’s about, it’s about redemption, it’s about getting a second shot and realizing that you can make a difference and change your life if you’re unhappy with it;…….
I’m gonna go back to the premiere that we had of this… we had a premiere at a super Church in Elgin outside of Chicago, and 4,000 people showed up and actually 1,000 more showed up, 5,000..they had to turn 1,000 people away, and we were sitting in the front row, all the actors, and I was between Kristy and John Ratzenberger, and John leans over to me about half-way through it, because to have that emotion of bodies behind you and hear the laughter and the crying, and the moments that they would…whatever emotion they were going through, and John just said ‘I’ve never experienced anything like this before in my life’, and neither had I, it was just…it was incredible to be in that sort of situation, and you know that’s one reason why movies will never go away, as much as we enjoy watching things in our own house, we still like to get in that dark theatre with a bunch of, you know, other people to kind of sort of ride those waves of emotions, whatever it’s a comedy or a drama, whatever it may be, so I think..umm..I think people will..uhh..I think people really enjoy the ride;
