Interview with Kevin Sorbo

Interview Questions:

l. Kevin Sorbo - in Germany you are predominantly known to the TV viewers by your popular series 'Hercules' and 'Andromeda'. Has it been your wish since childhood to become an actor or were there completely different professional goals at first?

Kevin
Always wanted to be an actor....there were no other options in my life.  Had the dream at 11 years and stuck with it.

2. Were you a member of a theatre group during your time at school, and has your talent as an actor been helped along by teachers and parents?

Kevin
I told no one of my ambitions.  Fear of ridicule from friends.  I was a sports jock, so the drama kids were nerds and wimps...in our eyes, anyway.  Wasn't til I got to college that I started to study.

3. A commercial for the whisky brand 'Jim Beam' made you known to the general public - how did this commercial shooting come about - did you apply for it specifically?

Kevin
Typical casting call as they do for all commercials, tv, or movies.  I got lucky and got the job.  Shot in New Zealand where 2 years later I filmed Hercules for 7 years!!!

4. What reactions did you get concerning the commercial, and what projects followed afterwards?

Kevin
Reactions were huge since the commercial aired around the world. Igot fan mail!! Got invites for dates from women all around the world. Too funny. Did not get me more work. I was always very busy in the commercial world, so i did not notice any big bounce in work due to the Jim Beam commercial.

5. You studied at the Minnesota State University Moorhead - however you quit studying in favour of acting - a risky venture - how did your family react towards your decision?

Kevin
Parents were not too happy, but they wanted me to follow my heart. Dad was a teacher, so proper education was very important. Iam only 1/2 year from my degree. Just knew it was time to go after the acting career.

6. After the discontinued study there must have followed a tough road which can't always have been easy. Do you still remember the jobs you did then, and have there been moments when you have regretted taking the steps to end your study?

Kevin
Never a regret.....I was lucky. Started to work right away with commercials and print jobs. Never did the full on struggle actor thing. Didn't have to wait tables or bartend.

7. 1993 you went to audition for the part that would change your life in a positive way: 'Hercules'!
Were you aware of the historical facts around the demigod Hercules, and how did you prepare yourself for the part?

Kevin
No prep came from traditional greek Hercules. I had read all of the mythology when i was in school. Prep came from the script only which was filled with humor and fun
.

8. At first there were the 'Hercules' movies, which went on to become a series. Did you see a chance in 'Hercules' to gain fame and were you a little bit afraid of being typecast too much in this role (whether by the audience or directors)?

Kevin
Hollywood always typecasts...much more than the audience does. Why worry about that?! I got a great job for 7 years that other actors only dream of!! I loved the role and will always love the show. The show gave birth to Xena and young Hercules...those shows would have never happened without the success of Hercules. I am very proud of that.

9. In the series it looks like the 'Hercules' team was a big family - can you confirm this impression and do you still have contact with your colleagues from the series today?

Kevin
We laughed every day on set. Had a great time. I was sad to see it end. Michael Hurst and I keep in contact as well as a few of the stunt guys.

10.You got to know and to love your wife on the set of 'Hercules' as well - was it clear to you from the beginning that you and Sam would be a perfect couple, or has the road to Sam's heart been a bit more rocky, after all..?

Kevin
Never rocky. We both knew right away. First sight thing.

11.Which episodes of 'Hercules' are your favourites - if you can tell this after so many episodes?

Kevin
Don't like to pick faves, but i will take 'The Apple' and 'Fancy Free'....my first time directing and Michael's first time directing.

12.Did you shoot all action scenes yourself or have there been doubles for risky stunts?

Kevin
I did most of my own stunts, but the risky ones went to my stunt double.

13.After the 6th season 'Hercules' finished - to the regret of many fans, you left the action genre and 'Andromeda' followed. Did you find that because of this change some fans got lost, or did your fan base stick with you?

Kevin
Some people followed, some did not....some like the fantasy of Hercules....some like Sci Fi.

14.What attraction did the series of 'Andromeda' have for you personally?

Kevin
Loved Star Trek and Andromeda was created by Gene Roddenberry. Love Sci Fi as well.

15.You have also played in many more movies - which of them, thinking back, is something very special and why?

Kevin
I pick projects for a variety of reasons, but main reason is my character. Do i like him...do i want to be him....

16.Hollywood movies and series in past times and today - do you personally notice differences in this business, that make things harder for young actors today than 15 years ago?

Kevin
It has always been hard...but the whole Hollywood thing is even more political today than it has ever been. Hollywood is a strange beast run by power hungry and very insecure people, mostly men. That is a dangerous combination. Hollywood will fight to the death for freedom of speech, but only if you agree with what they are saying.

17.Kevin Sorbo privately - how can we imagine your spare time - which hobbies do you enjoy, for example?

Kevin
Golf, basketball....all with my kids.

18.You have, together with your wife, three kids, and are actively involved as Chair and Spokesperson in the organisation 'A World Fit For Kids' - could you provide our readers with an insight into this organisation and its field of activity?

Kevin
worldfitforkids.org is the site to see. Been part of this for 13 years. We give kids hope. Self esteem. A reason to believe in their dreams and go after them.

19.What advice would you give young people who dream of becoming actors?

Kevin
Don't do it for fame....do it because you love the craft.

20.Which plans are you pursuing, in regard to your profession, for the future?

Kevin
I have my own production company now. Working hard in raising money for many wonderful scripts I have. Staying busy shooting movies. Ready for my next series. Will happen soon!
I have 6 movies coming out in 2010!! Go to kevinsorbo.net for more info

Many thanks for answering the questions - we wish you and your family all the best we can think of for your further path along life!

Kind regards,
Franziska Maier
