about Kevin

Kevin’s interview with Rusty Humphries (Talk Radio
Network)

RH: ….good friend of mine, who I’m trying to get to know a little bit better, he is such a great guy, somebody that, you know, whenever he’s got a project or something going on I want you to know about, because we want to make sure the good guys are noticed as he should be; he was in Andromeda, Meet the Spartans, An American Carol and Hercules; he’s got a movie coming out in a little bit, that he filmed in Hawaii when I was out there for my honeymoon, called Soul Surfer, Kevin Sorbo, welcome back to the Rusty Humphries show, how are you sir;

KS: Wow, you had me on that fast, what did I do..

RH: You did a lot of stuff, Hercules, Andromeda, Meet the Spartans, a whole bunch of stuff (clicking fingers)..

KS: That’s good, that’s good…actually when we talked..I was in Hawaii right, that’s when we talked!

RH: We talked yes, right around then, I think you were just leaving…no no no…you were in…you were in..oh what was the country..off Italy..(clicking fingers)..

KS: Oh, was I in Malta already when I did that..

RH: Malta, you were in Malta yes…

KS: Oh wow, I thought we had talked when I…maybe I..like it was the first week there, yeah I just got back from there just about a week, about a week and a half ago..

RH: Now let me ask you, when you go to different countries do they ask you for papers.. (KS and RH laughing).. I’m guessin’ once or twice as you travel they might say ‘so are you really who you say you are’, don’t they?

KS: Sure they do.. (both laughing).. we’re the only country easy to get into (laughing)..other countries you have to show papers to ‘em..

RH: And we’re the country that everybody wants to come to, I don’t understand why its so hard…

KS: …boy they wanna be here don’t they..

RH: What is the difference as you travel the world…going around…I mean there’s a lot of beautiful places in the world but, I mean, whats different about coming home, why is America home ‘cause you could live anywhere you wanted..

KS: You know, its..umm..its..with all the problems going on and with the direction we’re heading its still the best country in the world…(if things) keep changing though so, I’ll be moving to New Zealand soon,.. if I have to live in a socialist country I’ll be moving to New Zealand..(RH laughing)..its a smaller and easier one to control I think. Umm.. its just you know, its America, you know, its still the best place in the world to be, I mean, as much as the press wants us to believe that everybody hates us, I mean when I was over in Malta, when I was over, down in..I went to Rome after that, hung around Italy for a while, the people were very nice, you know, I didn’t get this ‘we hate America’ kind of thing..the one’s who hadn’t been here said they wanted to come and check it out, so, I don’t know..

RH: I still feel like I could feel like after…I’ve been to Rome and all those places, you come home, you still want to kiss the ground, there’s still something about America where its just..I don’t know..its clean and its nice and we’ve got roads that work and there’s too much food, and we’re all fat, and I mean..you know what..the police aren’t trying to shake you down for money, they don’t ask you for papers even if you are an illegal immigrant.. (KS: ..yeah..)..I mean there’s jut no place like…

KS: I’ll tell ya, I shot a movie last year in Sofia, Bulgaria and I didn’t feel that comfortable walking around, and, ah, we were..there was a bunch of us actors, one day we had off, we said lets go check out the city, and we jumped on one of their trams there, and within 10 minutes we got…the tram was stopped by the police and we were pulled off and they fined us all like 50 dollars for not having the proper ticket…we had the proper ticket but that didn’t matter, we were the foreigners and they just charged us all 50 bucks, and you know damn well that the driver was in on this,.. said ‘we’ve got a group of Americans here, lets’…he probably gets a 10% kickback from these guys; the KGB and the Mafia’s all over that country and its just sad, you can feel it..you feel..they run everything, its certainly..its certainly still there and you kind of go..’you know what, we’re pretty lucky to have what we have, I tell ya’..

RH: And yet we have this leadership that think that guys like Mao wasn’t so bad…

KS: Yeah, yeah..

RH: ..but Mao wasn’t so bad, communism wasn’t so bad, but boy if we want to protect our borders we’re evil racists..

KS: Yeah..I know, its just unbelievable..I don’t know..

RH: Kevin, I know you’re working on a bunch of new movies right now and stuff. As a matter of fact Soul Surfer is getting ready to come out fairly soon and by the way, your wife in the movie Soul Surfer, is a big listener of the programme, she’s working on a new movie with Adam Sandler too..

KS: Arlene Newman, yeah..

RH: Yeah, so she’s doing pretty well…what movies do you have coming out..

KS: They’re very busy in Hawaii…they’re shooting a George Clooney movie out there at the same time, and they’re starting the 4th instalment of The Pirates of the Caribbean..

RH: Why is that, just because everyone wants to go to Hawaii and hang out?

KS: I think so..(both laughing)..they started a new Hawaii Five 0 there as well..

RH: Oh that’s cool………KS: Yeah..

RH: Now..what movie..you’ve got some stuff and some projects coming out that people need to know about..what do you have coming out..

KS: The newest one coming out is a faithbased film called What If with Kristy Swanson and John Ratzenberger; we’re having the premieres in Chicago this coming August..

RH: Now Kristy Swanson, she was the original Buffy the
Vampire Slayer..

KS: She was..

RH: She’s cute..I like her..

KS: She’s great..she was a lot of fun to work with..and was a very good actress. John Ratzenberger was just awesome..he plays this curmudgeon..or angel.. that comes down from heaven to basically show how much I’ve screwed up my life…What If is a reverse It’s A Wonderful Life..and it’s a bit of a tearjerker..its got a lot of humour in it..its a really nice film..umm..

RH: And this is gonna be in theatres across the country?

KS: It is. The premiere like I said is gonna be in Chicago in August, then we’ll go to Grand Rapids where we filmed some of it as well... we filmed the entire thing in Michigan, in Manastee and Grand Rapids, so they’re gonna have a premiere there in Grand Rapids for it as well,..and then I’ve got.. Soul Surfer comes out..I think we have 2500 screens..Sony’s releasing that..and that’s with Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt and Carrie Underwood doing her first film, and Anna Sofia Robb, and it’s the story of Bethany Hamilton who at 13 years old was one of the top surfers in the world in her age group, and she was attacked by a tiger shark and lost her left arm, and within 3 weeks she was up surfing again..its an amazing story..and she’s..

RH:…I mean the 2 movies you’re talking about, these both sound like not only good movies, but family movies..are family movies coming back..

KS: They’re in the vein of The Blind Side..there’s no question faithbased movies are making a huge comeback right now; they’re realising there’s an audience out there that wants to not see Sean Penn’s movies with unhappy endings all the time, you know, (both laughing)..

RH: Is that your goal (KS: ..horrible..)..I mean are you holding out for those kind of movies now..

KS: Umm.. not necessarily..I look at different things..I mean I did my first really sort of bad guy part that comes out in November as well called Julia X; it’s a 3D feature where I played a serial killer and it was quite a departure for me, but it was..I tell you what..I had fun playing the part; its myself with 2 other lovely young actresses and it’s a pretty intense psychological thriller; its not like a slasher.. or gratuitous stuff.. more of a psychological thriller..its a very bizarre love story, let me put it that way..

RH: When you play guys like that, is it hard to get out of that mindset, not that they’re going to go around killing people, but do you feel like you’re becoming a mad person..angry..

KS: nah..you know, you may be a little more moody or something, but I think I’m pretty well grounded, I can kind of differentiate between acting and real life, and I don’t have (laughing)..but there are people that certainly do that..I mean I’m not a method actor..so I know what anger is, I know what happiness is, I can turn those things on and off; there are actors though..won’t name names but.. (RH: Right)..who are very method in their training and if you are the guy that they’re supposed to hate in the movie they won’t talk to you the entire 2 or 3 months on the movie set..so that’s pretty childish I think..

RH: Kind of like that one scene from..oh gosh, I can’t remember..Robert Downey Jnr,.. playing the black guy..he says ‘yes I’m not coming out of character until we finish the dvd extras series..(both laughing)..

KS: I think he was just pokin’ fun at it you know; he’s a really good actor..I’ve only met him a few times..I don’t know him well, but I think he’s a very good actor..

RH: Well Kevin, I’m sorry we didn’t get to hang out in LA, hope we do that sometime soon..I want everybody to go check out whatif-movie.com..What If’s the name of the movie coming out..it sounds great..whatif-movie.com..Kevin Sorbo, one of the real good guys, its great to have you back on the Rusty Humphries Show, thank you so much..

KS:….anytime, thank you sir, I appreciate it..

RH: Take care my brother, from another mother..comin’ up..
